Welch 1397 DuoSeal High Vacuum Pump Fully Tested and Working
This is a Welch 1397 DuoSeal two-stage high-vacuum pump. These pumps are super-rugged, reliable machines. I have had a number of Welch pumps in the past and have always been very happy with them.
I picked out this pump because it was in excellent shape, albeit somewhat dusty. However, the sight glasses and interior were very clean, indicating the internals were clean and not caked in grime. I replaced the old electrical plug, cleaned the exterior up, checked the belts, and gave it an overall inspection. After filling it with oil and turning it on it steadily pumped down to a very low 1.5 millitorr (see final picture), which is absolutely fantastic for a used pump.
Once letting the pump come up to operating temperature it runs nice and quietly, though it does go through a loud "clicky" phase when initially turned on (most Welch pumps do this from my experience). I let the pump run for a while, checked for any oil leaks, and couldn't find anything. The main pump pulley in particular is also extremely clean so the shaft seal appears to be in excellent shape. All in all this will be an excellent large pump for whatever vacuum project you are working on. This pump is heavy, about 220 pounds.
